This information should answer most of your questions. Should you need additional info, please contact us.

Q. Is non-packaging plastic (rigid plastic) recyclable?

A. As part of Phoenix Plastics, GIRR’s onsite post-consumer plastics recycling program, we are now accepting rigid plastics made of 2 HDPE, 4 LDPE, 5 PP, and 6 PS. Items that are not stamped with a category identifier can be brought to the depot to be scanned for identification. Note that these plastics must be presented in good condition, i.e., clean, with minimal UV damage, and sorted separately from other plastics. Our depot staff will be there to help guide you.

Q. Do you accept hazardous waste containers even if they're cleaned?

A. No, we are unable to take any hazardous waste containers or materials even if they’ve been cleaned. The exception to this is motor oil and antifreeze containers up to 50 L in size, as part of the Interchange Recycling program materials. Please ask our staff if you have any questions.

Q. Do you take motor oil, or antifreeze?

A. As of January 2025, we are happy to be a part of the Interchange Recycling program. We are now accepting used (motor) oil, antifreeze, oil filters, and oil & antifreeze containers up to 50L in size. This is a service for the DIY user, who is servicing their own vehicles and equipment. Our depot staff will assist you with your Interchange Recycling drop offs.

Q. Do you accept my broken glass or ceramic dishware or pane glass?

A. Unfortunately, we can only accept beverage and food packaging (jars) glass. Both broken and unbroken packaging glass is accepted.

Q. What types of styrofoam other than food packaging do you take?

A. We take styrofoam packaging that was used to protect electronics, small appliances etc. Some types of squishy packaging foam are accepted; our depot staff will be able to identify acceptable squishy foam for you. We do not take foam board insulation, foam peanuts, packing chips or noodles, or furniture foam.

In the winter of 2024/25 we are piloting the a marine debris program. Check with our depot staff as marine foam may be acceptable if removed from the shores of Galiano beaches.

Q. Are my stand up food pouches, chip and snack bags, or cereal bags recyclable?

A.  Yes indeed. They are recyclable within our ‘Flexible Plastics’ category. Please bring in clean and dry. There is an exception to this: plastic-lined paper and paper-lined plastic are, unfortunately, not recyclable in BC.

Q. Do you accept insulation or other building materials and their plastic packaging?

A. No.

Q. Do you accept Kleenex or paper towels?

A. No, these materials are not recyclable within the Recycle BC guidelines.
