GIRR’s mandate is to manage and recycle the waste stream on Galiano through reduction, recover of recyclable materials and reuse.
GIRR values your privacy. This privacy notice explains how we manage Personal Information at all our locations.

WHAT WE COLLECT AND USE

We collect and use Personal Information only for the purposes of fulfilling our mandate, and only as permitted under BC’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). A lot of the personal information we collect is payment and membership information, which we collect from you. We collect personal information such as your IP via our website.

We explain why we collect Personal Information prior to or at the time of collection when possible.

Our staff take all reasonable steps to ensure the accuracy and completeness of any Personal Information we collect or record. Subject to applicable law, an individual who believes that there is an error in his or her Personal Information in our control may request correction of this information.

INFORMATION SECURITY

Our staff are only allowed to access and use the minimum amount of Personal Information they need to do their job. They must comply with our privacy and related policies at all time.

We employ administrative, physical and technical safeguards to ensure that Personal Information is at all times protected against unauthorized access, use, collection, disclosure, storage, retention, duplication, loss, theft and disposal.

SHARING PERSONAL INFORMATION

We only disclose Personal Information in order to perform our mandate or when legally required.

Personal Information is not disclosed for any purpose without prior review by the Operations Manager.

KEEPING AND DISPOSING OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

We only keep Personal Information as long as is necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected and as required by any other applicable legal or contractual requirements.

Personal Information used to make a decision that directly affects the individual the information is about is kept for a minimum of one year.

When we no longer need it, our staff follow our guidelines and procedures for the secure destruction of Personal Information.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Every staff person at GIRR is accountable for their own compliance with our Privacy Policy. Our staff are encouraged to consult with and seek advice from the Operations Manager.

All of our staff must immediately report any actual or suspected violation of privacy to the Operations Manager or the Chair of our Board.

GIRR has legal obligations to protect Personal Information about patrons, members and Staff. For example, we are governed by the BC PIPA and may also be governed by other related legislation as applicable on a case-by-case basis. We comply with PIPA when collecting, using, storing, and disclosing Personal Information.

All of our staff must complete a Confidentiality Agreement. Staff who fail to comply with their Confidentiality Agreements or our Privacy Policy receive disciplinary action.
