We at GIRR take our responsibility to our community seriously. We are committed to the safe and ethical disposal of your recycling and reducing our community’s footprint by reuse. We do this eagerly, but we do have logistical concerns we can’t wish away. Our enclosed spaces are small, and we handle many unclean items every week. This is our reality all year round. In the wake of this current pandemic it has become a more serious risk to our staff and our users, and we have had to make, and will have to make some difficult decisions in the coming hours/days/weeks regarding service.

Effective immediately we will be closing the Redirectory indefinitely.

The Depot will be closed on Friday, March 20.

In the next couple of days, we will be looking at the safe collection of materials at the Depot. This may mean a longer closure, limited hours, limited access, reduction in materials accepted, etc. We will put it all on the table. The decisions we make will also be informed by our Public Health officials, recycling partners and stewards.

We are supporting our staff by continuing to pay them their regular wages until the Federal and Provincial government get their financial support programs rolling. We will assist them in anyway we can to get on these programs and will step up to the plate if that assistance falls a little short.

We ask that you bear with us as we sort this through. Decisions may need to be made at a moment’s notice as new information becomes available. Many of you have the capacity to store your recycling for a long period of time. We notice that some of you already do! If you have items that you wish to bring to the Redirectory, keep them if you can or pass them to a neighbour or friend.

I will be posting another update by Friday midday.

Stay safe. Stay positive. Stay in touch with each other. Keep on loving and laughing your way through the day. Galiano is a strong community and we are proud to be a part of it
